A total of 1748 tentative vacancies have been announced for the Junior Engineer and Scientific Assistant posts in the SSC JE Examination 2026.
The posts of Junior Engineer and Scientific Assistant are classified as Group ‘B’ in Level-6 of the Pay Matrix of the 7th Central Pay Commission, with a pay scale ranging from Rs. 35,400 to Rs. 1,12,400 per month.
The selection process involves a Computer-Based Examination (CBE) conducted in two papers: Paper-I and Paper-II. Paper-I is qualifying in nature, and candidates shortlisted from Paper-I will proceed to Paper-II. Final selection and allocation of posts are based on the performance in Paper-II and the candidates' post preferences. For posts in the Border Roads Organization (BRO), candidates must also clear Physical Efficiency Tests and meet specified Physical and Medical Standards.
Educational qualifications vary by post and organization. Generally, a Degree or a Three-Year Diploma in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, or Telecommunication Engineering from a recognized University/Institute is required for Junior Engineer posts. For Scientific Assistant in IMD, a Bachelor’s Degree in Science with Physics or a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science/Applications/Electronics/Telecommunication Engineering is necessary. Some posts may also require relevant work experience.
Yes, there is negative marking in the SSC JE 2026 examination. For Paper-I, 0.25 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer. For Paper-II, one (01) mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.
The age limit for most Junior Engineer posts and Scientific Assistant in IMD is up to 30 years. However, for certain organizations like the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) and Director General of Lighthouses & Lightships, the age limit is up to 32 years. Age relaxation is applicable as per Government rules.
